“Chief” Carl Ritchie

Trusted Public Safety Leadership

With thirty-three years of law enforcement experience in our local community, “Chief” Carl Ritchie is the trusted public safety leader we need as Charleston County Sheriff.

An Air Force Office of Special Investigations & Security Forces Veteran, Chief Ritchie holds a Master of Criminal Justice from the Command College of South Carolina at Anderson University. His law enforcement career includes that as Military Police, SWAT, Investigations, Narcotics, and School Safety. His most recent law enforcement service was that of Mount Pleasant Police Chief from which he led the department to two Gold Standard reaccreditations and recognition as one of the safest cities in the nation.

A graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum, Chief Ritchie’s public safety experience includes leadership during the opening ceremonies for the Ravenel Bridge opening, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Convention, the Cooper Bridge River Run, and the Unity March of over 10,000 attendees following the Mother Emanuel mass shooting.

A Riley Fellow, Chief Ritchie currently serves on the Mount Pleasant Town Council, where he is a member of the Police, Judicial and Legal Committee; Chair of the Fire Committee; Member of the Public Works Committee; and a Member of the Transportation Committee. He previously served as a Board Member for the South Carolina Municipal Insurance and Risk Financing Fund and its Law Enforcement Advisory Committee.

A former Member of the USA Powerlifting, Chief Ritchie holds the national record for deadlifting in the LEO Division. He shares his knowledge of the sport and his love for helping others by coaching Special Olympics and leading the state’s Special Olympics Powerlifting program. He also serves as a Board Member for Father to Father, an organization that offers educational and support services to fathers trying to rebuild their lives and their families. 

Chief Ritchie has been married to his wife, Vicky, for 19 years. They have a blended family of seven children, all of whom graduated from Wando High School. The Ritchies are members of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant. Chief Ritchie also attends Bible Study at Sunrise Presbyterian Church on Isle of Palms.
